Russell Hicks & Curiosity Ink Media

Russell Hicks, recent President of Nickelodeon Production and Development, announced today he will be joining the new media company, Curiosity Ink Media. The original new venture will purchase existing entertainment libraries and then develop, produce, and distribute new global family entertainment franchise libraries across multiple platforms.

With the children’s entertainment industry perched at the edge of a new frontier, Curiosity INK Media is ready to share long-cherished characters and stories with audiences in fresh ways that stand apart in crowded media platforms.

“We have a love for great stories and characters. We also have the proven experience to develop them into powerful franchises that connect through all levels of content distribution with a single purpose: to bring these tales to life in a new digital and multi-platform age,” says Hicks.

Curiosity INK Media will initially focus on acquiring existing properties. Then its attention will move to licensing agreements and partnerships for content tailored to young consumers. Curiosity INK Media plans to leverage its exceptional creative talent, virtual studio, deep media distribution network, and creative relationships to take existing media properties into 21st century markets.  The company will take great efforts at this developmental stage prior to officially launching any content (slated for late 2018 or early 2019).

The recently established media company will greatly benefit Mr. Hicks’ unmatched background in every aspect of the children’s entertainment industry; He’s credited with creating iconic characters like Teddy Ruxpin and breathing life back into forgotten properties like Scooby Doo. For the last 25 years, Hicks has tapped his personal blend of energy, business strategy expertise and optimism to create beloved characters like The Thundermans, Henry Danger, and Loud House while growing SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—all of whom flourished and became worldwide kid favorites under Mr. Hicks’ leadership.

Curiosity INK Media will operate under the renowned brand-building prowess of Brent Watts. Watts’ agency, Struck, has developed many of the most recognizable franchises in family entertainment over the past 20 plus years: The SpongeBob and Dora franchises from Nickelodeon, the Dr. Seuss franchise, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda of DreamWorks Animation, and the Spider-Man franchise of Sony Pictures. These highly successful ventures have all been a part of Watts’ creative mind. His imagination pushes limits with new interpretations of familiar children’s brands. His ultimate goal is to fill the world with the kinds of stories and characters that make children curious.

Hicks and Watts have worked closely together for over 25 years and complement each other well.  Both have a passion for character-driven storytelling, groundbreaking aesthetics, and youth entertainment.  “Curiosity leads us to create better experiences for the people around us where anything is possible,” Hicks explained. “Curiosity INK Media aims to create a reimagined world for creators, dreamers, distributors, and storytellers.”
